All devices that have drivers in the standard Linux kernel are supported
``out of the box'' in the Red Hat kernel, with the exception of sound cards.
However, the modularized kernel simplifies the addition sound support. For more info on how to do this, see the Kernel-HOWTO
(which would be in /usr/doc/HOWTO).
For more info on special hardware that is supported by the kernel
directly, including SCSI devices, see the Hardware-HOWTO and the
SCSI-HOWTO (in the same place as above). There is also an
XFree86 HOWTO and a Metro-cards file that list supported video cards.
A 1.44M floppy drive connected as the first physical floppy device
(a:) is required.
Here are the requirements for various popular combinations of software:
Minimum Text Based Installation
- 386sx or better CPU
- 8M RAM
- 40M Hard Drive
- Any working video card (Hercules, CGA, VGA, SVGA, etc)
- Any supported CD-ROM drive
Minimum Text Based Installation, with X Window System
- 386sx or better CPU
- 8M RAM
- 80M Hard Drive
- Any XFree86 Supported Video card (VGA, and SVGA, see below)
- Mouse (most types are supported)
- Any supported CD-ROM drive
Recommended Configuration
- 486dx or better CPU
- 16M RAM
- 300M Hard Drive
- Any SVGA Card Supported by XFree86 or Metro X
- 3 Button Mouse
- SCSI Tape Drive (Optional)
- UPS (Optional)
- Double Spin CD-ROM drive
Supported video cards include:
- Most Diamond Cards
- Most S3 Based Cards
- ET4000 Based Cards
- ATI Cards
- Cirrus Logic 542x and 543x
- Chips and Technologies Based Cards
- Trident 8900 and 9400
- Most #9 Cards
Supported CD-ROM drives include:
- All IDE/ATAPI Compliant Drives
- All SCSI Drives connected to a supported controller card
- All Sound Blaster Interface Drives (Matsushta/Kotobuki/Panasonic)
- Mitsumi Drives
- Sony 535, CDU 31, CDU 33
