I'm curious: Usually, postings that can be interpretted as advertising
generate flames. Lots of postings have appeared in comp.os.minix that
are pure advertising; where to get it, how much it costs, phone numbers
and so forth. No one has objected to any of this, and I'd like to know
why not. Personally, I think advertising should be allowed, but I've
been scorched myself over this issue. I'd like to see Andy make a
million bucks, and I don't want any of these postings to be outlawed.
But... what difference have I missed?

Many of us are interested in MINIX. It is available for what I consider a
nominal price considering what you get and it has a liberal liscensing
agreement. I think if you will reasonably consider the amount of effort that
obviously went inti MINIX and what its being sold for, I Think you will
realize that Dr. Tanenbaum's goal is not to make a million bucks. If he was,
he certainly wouldn't be offering the source code to everybody for 79.95
and no copy protection.
Also minix has its own group now, so nobody has to read it. JUdging by the
interest generated by Andy's announcement, it is clear that most people agree
with me. IF you don't like what you read, just UNSUBSCRIBE to this newsgroup.
When more people get there hands on the book and software, The discussions
will no doubt become more technical.
