IBM Ships Powerful New Linux-Enabled Servers for the Midmarket
ARMONK, N.Y. - 25 May 2001: IBM today announced worldwide availability of new high-performance, integrated midmarket servers and operating system software designed to help customers reduce the cost of running an e-business. The new IBM eServer models are loaded with innovative enterprise server management solutions aimed at helping customers manage infrastructure complexity and reduce their costs by as much as 25 percent.
The IBM eServer iSeries systems are shipping with OS/400 Version 5 Release 1, the most feature-rich iSeries operating system release ever. The servers are being deployed with ground-breaking IBM technologies such as dynamic logical partitioning, remote wireless management and high-speed adapter technology that allows an xSeries server to link to an iSeries capable of managing large networks of Windows servers.The new servers also include native support for Linux in a logical partition, allowing customers to benefit from iSeries' robust reliability, scalability and security, while integrating their core business applications with Linux. A single iSeries server can support up to 31 separate Linux partitions. With this announcement, IBM delivers on its promise to support Linux across the eServer product line.

IBM eServer iSeries is powered by the latest generation of IBM POWER microprocessors made with silicon-on-insulator transistors and copper wiring. The high-end eServer i840 is the first in the industry to exceed 132,000 operations per second in the industry-standard SPECjbb2000 Java server benchmark. The achievement tops Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire 6800 line by 21 percent. In addition, the i840's lightning-fast 0.18 second response time is more than 15 times faster than the 2.8 seconds achieved by Sun.
Running Lotus Domino, the i840 also outpaces all servers, smashing its own world record for Domino performance and scalability. The new server handled 100,500 concurrent NotesBench R5 Mail Users on single server, with an average response time of 1/16th of a second -- twice as fast as the nearest competitor with nearly 12 times the number of concurrent users.
The new iSeries servers and OS/400 Version 5 Release 1 are generally available today. Pricing starts at $11,200.
