First I admit I am a newbie so please forgive this intrusion. Having been delighted to get not one but TWO Linux systems up I spent the next while having them ping each other. Eventually, I decided it was boring so I did a quick SHUTDOWN -H NOW to one and watched the other to see what happened. Nothing happened. Even though one of the Linux boxes clearly displays the message SYSTEM HALTED it is quite happy to respond to ping requests. I stopped the box doing the pinging and restarted it. To my suprise, the SYSTEM HALTED box merrily replied to the ping requests. Has anyone any idea what other services a halted Linux system will respond to. My confidence was restored when I switched off the Linux system - it stopped responding to pings. ----phew !! Peter White InfoTek Security.

Halting a Linux box does not shut down any of the networking. A Halted Linux box will happily and merrily forward packets as well.

A Halted >> Linux box will happily and merrily forward packets as well. Get the latest sysvinit (2.71) and find the script where the real "halt" or "reboot" command is called. Add the "-i" option. From the manual page: -i Shut down all network interfaces just before halt or reboot. sysvinit 2.71 is part of debian 1.3 and can also be gotten from ftp.cistron.nl/pub/people/miquels/software. I really ought to upload it to sunsite and tsx-11 this week. Remind me if I don't.
