However you will need the latest (February) release to run OpenServer 5 ELF binaries (and a 1.3.54 or later kernel). The SCO ELF support is very new. However most SCO programs are still COFF (since SCO didn't have ELF before OS5) which are fine. Mike

Of Microfocus Cobol, SQL Retreiver, Ingres, Informix, ... :-) If you think about the latest release of your (invaluable) iBCS2, then would you mind sharing it with the rest of the community in the near future? Or do you still think about commercial releases of this package? FYI: Though not officially offered (or even supported), the current public SCO-ODT release of Simple++ (one of the leading discrete event simulation packages) does work under iBCS2 like a charm. As it appeares to be faster than under SCO-ODT (on the same machine), I decided to drop SCO completely from my system. And even better news: Under Linux/iBCS2 it is about twice as fast on a Pentium-PC (90MHz,32MB RAM) than the current SunOS-4.x release on SunSparc5 (100MHz, 32MB). Great work, Mike & Co., carry on ! I'm trying. The throughput from here to tsx-11 is currently pathetic. I could type the hex quicker :-(. JS> As it appeares to be faster than under SCO-ODT (on the same machine), Last time I did any benchmarking, Linux+iBCS seemed to have the same system call speed as a SCO machine of twice the speed (roughly). Of course, this is only a very, very small percentage of most program's execution times. The main benefit is Linux' dynamic buffer cache that tends to hit disk far less often than SCO. The greatest loss is the need for bloaty static binaries or foreign shared libraries. In most cases the benefits win however :-). Mike

What about kernel drivers from SCO like drivers for a GDT3010 SCSI Cache Controller. Will it be possible to load them as modules into the linux kernel. I have heard that there is a defined interface between the kernel drivers and the SCO-kernel, so it should be possible. Is any one working on it? It would be a great advantage over SCO because nearly every hardware has a driver for SCO. But because I know how stable SCO is, if ibcs2 will provide a interface for SCO kernel drivers they should be totally separated from the normal linux kernel! Although the interface is defined there are underlying assumptions about how the kernel works and what its requirements are. How easy it would be to translate these I don't know. One of the aims of the LiS project was to be able to make use of SVR4 STREAMS modules but, to the best of my knowledge, that project has died - or at least entered indefinite suspended animation :-). Anyway, in general I suspect you would be better off writing a driver from scratch. Mike
