From: e...@aib.com (Eric Youngdale) Subject: Request to people who make ELF distributions. Date: 1995/05/26 Message-ID: <3q4m8b$fsp@rose.uthscsa.edu>#1/1 X-Deja-AN: 103358824 approved: linux-annou...@news.ornl.gov (Lars Wirzenius) sender: wirze...@rose.uthscsa.edu followup-to: comp.os.linux.development.system organization: AIB Software Corporation keywords: ELF, request, binaries, compatibility newsgroups: comp.os.linux.announce Now that we have finally arrived at the day when ELF can be released to the public as the official object/executable file format for linux, I would like to ask that people who make distributions continue to carry the old a.out shared libraries so that old binaries continue to run. In theory everything should eventually be recompiled for ELF, but there may be things (such as commercial binaries) for which ELF binaries might not be immediately available. The main reason I make this request is that, we don't want to annoy the vendors who have stuck their necks out on the line to create linux versions of their applications. -Eric -- "The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
