I have been anxiously waiting for NCSA to release their new
httpd 1.4 for some time now. I was a surprised/disappointed
to see a post by an NCSA rep at
http://union.ncsa.uiuc.edu/HyperNews/get/www/httpd-beta.html saying :

"Linux doesn't support file descriptor passing, though some
people have proposed a hack using the /proc file system
to open the file descriptors of other processes.

So, linux #defines NO_PASS in httpd.h, and therefore
doesn't support StartServers and MaxServers. It acts like
an enhanced 1.3, similar to if you set StartServers/MaxServers
to 0."

So I won't be able to use the new server to its fullest :(

You can do it as a hack using the proc filesystem, but the server group
is not implementing this due to its inelegance and general 'kludgy-ness'.

If fd passing is ever supported by the kernel I'm sure it will be
supported.

You might want to check out APACHE which is also an improved NCSA 1.3
server by a group that intends to make that future work on the server is
not commercialised such as NCSA has done with Mosaic.

Have a look at the following URL for details:

http://www.hyperreal.com/apache/

To make the future work on the server non-commercialized unlike what NCSA
has done with Mosaic, you mean. I don't think anyone wants the NCSA server
code, and if you look at it, you'll know why . . . Rob's learned a lot
since then, I hear.

Apache intends to support a similar (read: 1.4 derived) file descriptor passing
scheme. Its in alpha now. This means that Apache will require the
modifications to the kernel as well.

Any idea if there are patches yet? Has Linus got them?
