However, in so doing, I had tons of problems and they all stemmed from an incomplete understanding of the format lines in inittab must take. Does documentation exist somewhere describing the format and what option are available for this file? For example, I have determined that the c1,c2,c3 and so forth lines refer to virtual consoles so I have commented out all lines except c which I assume is the main console and then replaced respawn getty with xdm, but the format for this baffls me and for all I know that's a very foolish way of doing things.
