Ok, well I have run on my machine before (incessant flamers,
skip here - I have an ET4000 board and I've run it before) through
all the versions released to the public of the "Linux X11". Now, my
problme is that I want a reasonably fast server (ie, XFree86 - the
ET4000 speedups and such will really impact performance in a positive
way for my system!). I guess things can be summed up in two questions:
1. What's the timetable for "Linux X11" 2.0?
- Last I heard was a chicken and egg problem between X11
and GCC...
2. If "Linux X11" 2.0 isn't coming too soon, what do I need to
build an XFree86 server that is Linux-aware (what is
needed patch-wise to do such things as handling VCs in
the "right" way and restoring video mode, all that...).
- I've seen one X3861.2E server binary out on sunsite,
and it looks like it will work, but there's a big
difference in my book between working and working
CORRECTLY (handling Linux-isms right).
Any helps would be appreciated, preferably in mail unless it
would be of benefit to the world. The S/N ratio around here is enough
to make me stop reading the group. And no, for the "xjxtirn handles all
that for you" crowd, I can't do killfiles - reading e digests here.

i hope to have it released by the end of the month, but it may be sooner.

not really true. i needed the newest gcc changes from hlu to get any sort
of x11 shared libs working. with his latest set, i have a running version
of x386 1.2e 1.0.2 (yes, note the name).

last night i finished upgrading my 1.2e to xfree86 1.0X, with the intention
of incorporating the linux defines into the next release of xfree86 (so
everyone can compile their own :-). no really, they are much better at
tracking the mit changes than i am, and with hlu feeling better about
the jump tables, and the kernel stabilizing, things are ripe to be
included in xfree86.
there are many neat things in xfree86, like a mono driver which works on
any kind of vga, linkable servers, speedo and type1 fonts, etc. i have
also included everything but the kitchen sink for server additions (all
except pex - i need a 1gb drive for that!). i have also compiled it with
true tcp connections (yes, you'll be able to run it without).
hopefully this weekend i can pack things up, and then i'm gonna go into
a tiny alpha, to make sure the tcp stuff works, ati cards, etc. this is
to avoid a x11v2.1 right away. hence the release by month end.
after that, we should be in step with xfree86, which is *a good thing*.

p.s. if you are interested in playing with the server, keep tabs on the
x11 mailing list and i'll tell people when its available. btw - don't
bother doinng too much development work with x11v1.1 - xfree86 (and x11v2.0)
is much different (should be easier to work with).
