Le Blanc) Alan Clegg has recently announced that the Linux archive at banjo.concert.net will be withdrawn on August 14 because of lack of filestore. This has been one of the three 'primary' sites for Linux files, as well as the official site for the releases of GCC and for the linux-standards list. It has also served as a prime location for files from Linus himself, for X11, and for such packages as the dos file system. I'm sure we are all very grateful to Alan for providing this service, and very sorry for its disappearance. Is it possible for those of us who administer anonymous ftp sites to discuss what can be done to provide replacements for the facilities which will be disappearing from banjo? -- Owen LeBlanc@mcc.ac.uk

V. Le Blanc) Is it possible for those of us who administer anonymous ftp sites to discuss what can be done to provide replacements for the facilities which will be disappearing from banjo? I've sent mail to a few people who have been providing packages to banjo. For example, hlu now has an account on tsx-11, and will be placing new GCC files in ~ftp/pub/linux/GCC directly. If other people who are providing major packages would like FTP accounts on tsx-11, that can be arraged, within reason. If you are interested in doing so, please send email to ftp-linux@tsx-11.mit.edu. Note: tsx-11 is my personal workstation, and while I don't forsee it going away anytime soon, this something that cannot be ruled out. If someone else in the U.S. is willing to volunteer the time, energy, disk space, and network bandwidth to be a major FTP site, that would be a Good Thing. I am a bit nervous about people talking about TSX-11 as the only Linux repository in the U.S.; that sort of responsibility can very rapidly make this sort of job (which tends to be a thankless one that people take for granted) a lot less fun. :-) - Ted P.S. Yes, I will try to make the speed at which uploaded requests to tsx-11 much faster than it has before. But it is difficult when people upload packages without telling me what they are, and why they're better than an already existing package in the archive. I would appreciate it if you would keep that in mind the next time you read complaints about how difficult it is to find stuff at an FTP site because everything is disorganized and there multiple versions of a particular package. I'll do my best to try to reduce that, but all you people who upload things to tsx-11 are going to have to help me out.

I am in the process of setting things up and transfering all the linux tree, so there may well be a period (hopefully no more than a week) between the demise of banjo and the presence of the linux stuff at the ftp site sunsite.unc.edu. I'll post an annoncement to the group when things are going again. if you have questions, you can respond to this address or to my new one at jem@sunsite.unc.edu. jem. -- Jonathan Magid magidj@marimba.cellbio.duke.edu Virtual pizza Delivery (tm)::faxed in 30 cycles or less or you get it ========================================FREE!!!=======================

In the future, I will put the official GCC stuffs on tsx-11 and fgb1.fgb.mw.tu-muenchen.de. As a matter of fact, I have been putting testing GCC releases on tsx-11. As far as testing stuffs go, we have some other sites. -- H.J. Gcc/libc maintainer for Linux. ===== In article <5495@mccuts.uts.mcc.ac.uk>, zlsiial@uts.mcc.ac.uk (A. V. I can't speak for ftp.uu.net, but uunet.uu.net, the UUCP site, does not have everything that tsx-11 has. The MCC-Interim and X11 distributions are notably absent. -- Any opinions above are mine, and do not necessarily reflect the views of SAI.
