Just had a thought.... Since the X386 guy isn't up for releasing new video
board drivers, and it seems like Trident people will never see X11 since they
don't have the space...
Could someone release linkable objects for X11 and source code to a skeleton
for the X386 video driver so those people who want X11 but have a strange
video card can just download a big X.o file and write their own video driver,
link it and awaaaaay!
This would help all those people who've volunteered to write a trident driver.
This would help all those people who've volunteered to write HiColor drivers.
This would help people with other video boards and little disk space to use X.
I've got X running on my big 386 with an ET4000, but i'd also like it on the
little 386 with a very strange tiwanese card that X doesn't want to have any
part of.
Pardon me if this idea isn't as sane as I think it is.

thats pretty much correct. i have an et4000 and no immediate plans to
purchase a bunch of other boards :-) not as long as this one works!

my current plan is to provide the cdiffs and supporting libs for such
development. i admit i was too lazy with this in the past (hence the
public announcement - nothing like guilt to get you going :-). if you
are interesting in playing like this, please join the x11 channel - i
won't waste the net's time with updates/debugging statements.
there is someone who is working on trident patches - perhaps once he gets
up to the latest x11 release and i get the support done then people can
collaborate on the efforts. i'd like to see generic vga support, perhaps
in the form of vgalib-type linkage...

As I said about several time, it makes no sence to support the Trident
things. There are several reasons:
a) There a serveral INCOMPATIBLE flavors of the TVGA8900. Only
the 8900C is usable for X386
b) You can only write a driver for boards that have 1MB RAM.
To program these guys with only 512KB you'd had to rewrite
mostly all of the initialization code.
c) The documentation from Trident is buggy, which means that
even if you get hold of their original databooks you have
almost no chance to get the thing working.
d) VGA boards using this chipset are under X (I'm not talking
about an optimized Windows driver ;-)) only half the speed
of an ET4000 board.
So what keeps you from investing the $100 for getting a cheap tiwanese
ET4000 instead. The TVGA8900 is not worth the trouble.
And please don't forget I know what I'm talking about. The commercial
X386 1.3 includes support for these beasts. And I wouldn't recommend
to use the TVGA8900 at all.

Simply let it be. 100 bucks for a better SVGA is not a world.
