AfterStep is a continuation of the BowMan window manager which was originally put together by Bo Yang. BowMan was based on the fvwm window manager, written by Robert Nation. Fvwm was based on code from twm. And so on... It was originally designed to emulate some of the look and feel of the NEXTSTEP user interface, but has since taken steps towards adding more useful, requested, and neat features especially in 1.4 version ! The changes which comprise AfterStep's personality were originally part of bowman development, but due to a desire to move past simple emulation and into a niche as its own valuable window manager, AfterStep designers decided to change the project name and move on.
Important features of AfterStep include:
1. Wharf: a free-floating application loader which can "Swallow" running programs and also can contain "Folders" of more applications. 2. Gradient filled TitleBars with 5 button : help/zap, action/tasks, iconize/maximise, shade/stick & close/destroy buttons 3. Gradient filled root window PopUp menus which can be configured to accomodate different tastes and styles of management 4. NEXTSTEP style icons which give a consistent look to the entire desktop 5. Pixmapped Pager with desktop pixmmaping 6. Easy to use look files, to share you desktop appearance with your friends 7. Start menu entries in a hierarchy of directories 8. WinList : a tasklist which can be horizontal or vertical 9. Many modules & asapps to give a good look to your X window station
What's a cool window manager without some cool applets? Well... it's still cool, but these applets which can be used in the Wharf module for AfterStep or Window Maker can add both spice and productivity to your preferred window manager, such as a handy clock and information about system resources.
If you've installed the AfterStep packages, you should also install these packages. Enjoy!
AnotherLevel is a custom configuration of the popular fvwm2 window manager. Fvwm stands for (?) virtual window manager. You can fill in the blank for the 'f': fast, flexible, friendly and fabulous all could apply. This window manager is based on TheNextLevel desktop configuration, created by Greg J. Badros, which won the 1996 Red Hat Desktop Contest.
AnotherLevel is designed to be easily configured by the user.
Window Maker is an X11 window manager which emulates the look and feel of the NeXTSTEP (TM) graphical user interface. It is relatively fast, feature rich and easy to configure and use. Window Maker is part of the official GNU project, which means that Window Maker can interoperate with other GNU projects, such as GNOME.
Window Maker allows users to switch themes 'on the fly,' to place favorite applications on either an application dock, similar to AfterStep's Wharf or on a workspace dock, a 'clip' which extends the application dock's usefulness.
You should install the WindowMaker package if you use Window Maker as your window manager or if you'd like to try using it. If you do install the WindowMaker package, you may also want to install the AfterStep-APPS package, which includes applets that will work with both AfterStep and Window Maker window managers.
Control-center is a configuration tool for easily setting up your GNOME environment.
GNOME is the GNU Network Object Model Environment. That's a fancy name, but really GNOME is a nice GUI desktop environment.
It's a powerful, easy to configure environment which helps to make your computer easy to use.
Enlightenment is a window manager for the X Window System that is designed to be powerful, extensible, configurable and pretty darned good looking! It is one of the more graphically intense window managers.
Enlightenment goes beyond managing windows by providing a useful and appealing graphical shell from which to work. It is open in design and instead of dictating a policy, allows the user to define their own policy, down to every last detail.
This package will install the Enlightenment window manager.
A Configuration tool for easily setting up Enlightenment
FVWM (the F stands for whatever you want, but the VWM stands for Virtual Window Manager) is a window manager for the X Window System. FVWM was derived from the twm window manager. FVWM is designed to minimize memory consumption, to provide window frames with a 3D look, and to provide a simple virtual desktop. FVWM can be configured to look like Motif.
Install the fvwm package if you'd like to use the FVWM window manager. If you install fvwm, you'll also need to install fvwm2-icons.
FVWM2 (the F stands for whatever you want, but the VWM stands for Virtual Window Manager) is an improved version of the FVWM window manager for the X Window System and shares the same characteristics as FVWM.
Install the fvwm2 package if you'd like to use the FVWM2 window manager. If you install fvwm2, you'll also need to install fvwm2-icons.
The fvwm2-icons package contains icons, bitmaps and pixmaps used by the FVWM and FVWM2 X Window System window managers.
You'll need to install fvwm2-icons if you are installing fvwm and/or fvwm2.
Midnight Commander is a visual shell much like a file manager, only with way more features. This is the GNOME version. It's coolest feature is the ability to ftp, view tar, zip files and poke into RPMs for specific files. The GNOME version of Midnight Commander is not yet finished though. :-(
GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment) is a user-friendly set of applications and desktop tools to be used in conjunction with a window manager for the X Window System. GNOME is similar in purpose and scope to CDE and KDE, but GNOME is based completely on Open Source software. The gnome-core package includes the basic programs and libraries that are needed to install GNOME.
You should install the gnome-core package if you would like to use the GNOME desktop environment. You'll also need to install the gnome-libs package. If you want to use Linuxconf with a GNOME front end, you'll also need to install the gnome-linuxconf package.
Core applications for the K Desktop Environment. Included are: kdm (replacement for xdm), kwm (window manager), kfm (filemanager, web browser, ftp client, ...), konsole (xterm replacement), kpanel (application starter and desktop pager), kaudio (audio server), kdehelp (viewer for kde help files, info and man pages), plus other KDE components (kcheckpass, kikbd, kvt, kscreensaver, kcontrol, kfind, kfontmanager, kmenuedit, kappfinder).
PAM password authentication is supported via PAM service: kde.
The Desktop Switcher is a tool which enables users to easily switch between various desktop environments that they have installed. The tool includes support for GNOME, KDE, and AnotherLevel. Support for different environments on different computers is available, as well as setting a "global default."

Wmakerconf is a GTK+ based graphical user interface configuration tool for the Window Maker window manager. Wmakerconf supports all Window Maker attributes. Wmakerconf provides a font selection browser, a pixmap preview browser, a color selection dialog, a shortcut dialog, and a file selection dialog. Wmakerconf also provides tooltips in multiple languages.
If you use the Window Maker window manager, you should probably install the wmakerconf package, because it will make configuration a little easier.
The wmconfig program is a helper program which provides output for use in configuring window managers. Wmconfig will produce a list of menu definitions for a specified X window manager (currently, FVWM2, FVWM95, AfterStep, MWM, IceWM and KDE are supported). Wmconfig's output can be placed into your .rc file or you can use the output for other configuration purposes.
Xfm is a file manager for the X Window System. Xfm supports moving around the directory tree, multiple windows, moving/copying/deleting files, and launching programs.
Install xfm if you would like to use a graphical file manager program.
This section contains packages that are associated with providing hardware support for specific video cards under Red Hat Linux.
X server for cards built around 3D Labs GLINT and Permedia chipsets, including GLINT 500TX with IBM RGB526 RAMDAC, GLINT MX with IBM RGB526 and IBM RGB640 RAMDAC, Permedia with IBM RGB526 RAMDAC and the Permedia 2 (classic, 2a, 2v).
If you are installing the X Window System and the video card in your system is an older IBM 8514 or a compatible from a company such as ATI, you should install XFree86-8514.
To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package.
If you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install the XFree86-devel package.
This is the X server for AGX-based cards, such as the Boca Vortex, Orchid Celsius, Spider Black Widow and Hercules Graphite.
If you are installing the X Window System and the video card in your system is an AGX, you'll need to install XFree86-AGX. To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package.
Finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install the XFree86-devel package.
This is the X server for the generic frame buffer device used on Amiga, Atari and Macintosh/m68k machines.
Support for Intel and Alpha architectures is included in the Linux 2.2 kernel, as well.
This is the X server for the #9 Imagine 128 and similar video boards.
XFree86-Mach32 is the X server package for video cards built around ATI's Mach32 chip, including the ATI Graphics Ultra Pro and Ultra Plus.
If you are installing the X Window System and the video card in your system is based on the Mach32 chip, you need to install XFree86-Mach32. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-Mach64 is the server package for cards based on ATI's Mach64 chip, such as the Graphics Xpression, GUP Turbo, and WinTurbo cards. Note that this server is known to have problems with some Mach64 cards. Check http://www.xfree86.org for current information on updating this server.
If you are installing the X Window System and the video card in your system is based on the Mach64 chip, you need to install XFree86-Mach64. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to be developing applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-Mach 8 is the X server for video cards built around ATI's Mach8 chip, including the ATI 8514 Ultra and Graphics Ultra.
If you are installing the X Window System and the video card in your system is based on the Mach8 chip, you need to install XFree86-Mach8. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to be developing applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-Mono is a generic monochrome (2 color) server for VGA cards. XFree86-Mono will work for nearly all VGA compatible cards, but will only support a monochrome display.
If you are installing the X Window System and your VGA card is not currently supported, you should install and try either XFree86-Mono or XFree86-VGA16, depending upon the capabilities of your display. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-P9000 is the X server for video cards built around the Weitek P9000 chip, such as most Diamond Viper cards and the Orchid P9000 card.
If you are installing the X Window System and you have a Weitek P9000 based video card, you should install XFree86-P9000. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-S3 is the X server for video cards based on S3 chips, including most #9 cards, many Diamond Stealth cards, Orchid Farenheits, Mirco Crystal 8S, most STB cards, and some motherboards with built-in graphics accelerators (such as the IBM ValuePoint line). Note that if you have an S3 ViRGE based video card, you'll need XFree86-S3V instead of XFree86-S3.
If you are installing the X Window System and you have a video card based on an S3 chip, you should install XFree86-S3. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-S3V is the X server for video cards based on the S3 ViRGE chipset.
If you are installing the X Window System and you have a video card based on an S3 ViRGE chip, you should install XFree86-S3V. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
X server for most simple framebuffer SVGA devices, including cards built from ET4000 chips, Cirrus Logic chips, Chips and Technologies laptop chips, Trident 8900 and 9000 chips, and Matrox chips. It works for Diamond Speedstar, Orchid Kelvins, STB Nitros and Horizons, Genoa 8500VL, most Actix boards, the Spider VLB Plus, etc. It also works for many other chips and cards, so try this server if you are having problems.
XFree86-VGA16 is a generic 16 color server for VGA boards. XFree86-VGA16 will work on nearly all VGA style graphics boards, but will only support a low resolution, 16 color display.
If you are installing the X Window System and your VGA video card is not specifically supported by another X server package, you should install either XFree86-Mono or XFree86-VGA16, depending upon the capabilities of your display. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to be develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-W32 is the X server for cards built around ET4000/W32 chips, including the Genoa 8900 Phantom 32i, the Hercules Dynamite, the LeadTek WinFast S200, the Sigma Concorde, the STB LightSpeed, the TechWorks Thunderbolt, and the ViewTop PCI.
If you are installing the X Window System and your VGA video card is based on the ET4000/W32 chipset, you should install XFree86-W32. You will also need to install the XFree86 package, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. And, finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XF86Setup is a graphical user interface configuration tool for setting up and configuring XFree86 servers. XF86Setup can configure video settings, keyboard layouts, mouse types, etc. XF86Setup can't be used with non-VGA compatible video cards, with fixed-frequency monitors, or with OS/2.
Install XF86Setup if you have used it before and prefer to keep using it to configure your X server. If you do not have a preference for XF86Setup, you should instead install and use Xconfigurator, Red Hat's graphical user interface configuration tool for the X Window System.
Xnest is an X Window System server which runs in an X window. Xnest is a 'nested' window server, actually a client of the real X server, which manages windows and graphics requests for Xnest, while Xnest manages the windows and graphics requests for its own clients.
You will need to install Xnest if you require an X server which will run as a client of your real X server (perhaps for testing purposes).
Xvfb (X Virtual Frame Buffer) is an X Windows System server that is capable of running on machines with no display hardware and no physical input devices. Xvfb emulates a dumb framebuffer using virtual memory. Xvfb doesn't open any devices, but behaves otherwise as an X display. Xvfb is normally used for testing servers. Using Xvfb, the mfb or cfb code for any depth can be exercised without using real hardware that supports the desired depths. Xvfb has also been used to test X clients against unusual depths and screen configurations, to do batch processing with Xvfb as a background rendering engine, to do load testing, to help with porting an X server to a new platform, and to provide an unobtrusive way of running applications which really don't need an X server but insist on having one.
If you need to test your X server or your X clients, you may want to install Xvfb for that purpose.
Xconfigurator is a full-screen, menu-driven program which walks you through setting up your X server. Xconfigurator is based on the sources for xf86config, a utility from XFree86.
You should install Xconfigurator if you are installing the X Window System.
This section contains packages associated with the X Window System graphical user interface.
If you want to use the X Window System, you should install X11R6-contrib. This package holds many useful programs from the X Window System, version 11, release 6 contrib tape. The programs, contributed by various users, include listres, xbiff, xedit, xeyes, xcalc, xload and xman, among others.
You will also need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 package which corresponds to your video card, one or more of the XFree86 fonts packages, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package.
Finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
If you're going to use the X Window System and you have a high resolution monitor capable of 100 dpi, you should install XFree86-100dpi-fonts. This package contains a set of 100 dpi fonts used on most Linux systems.
If you are installing the X Window System, you will also need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 package corresponding to your video card, the X11R6- contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. If you need to display certain fonts, you may also need to install other XFree86 fonts packages.
And finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install the XFree86-devel package.
If you want to install the X Window System (TM) on your machine, you'll need to install XFree86.
The X Window System provides the base technology for developing graphical user interfaces. Simply stated, X draws the elements of the GUI on the user's screen and builds methods for sending user interactions back to the application. X also supports remote application deployment--running an application on another computer while viewing the input/output on your machine. X is a powerful environment which supports many different applications, such as games, programming tools, graphics programs, text editors, etc. XFree86 is the version of X which runs on Linux, as well as other platforms.
This package contains the basic fonts, programs and documentation for an X workstation. However, this package doesn't provide the program which you will need to drive your video hardware. To control your video card, you'll need the particular X server package which corresponds to your computer's video card.
In addition to installing this package, you will need to install the XFree86 package which corresponds to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. You may also need to install one of the XFree86 fonts packages.
And finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
XFree86-75dpi-fonts contains the 75 dpi fonts used on most X Window Systems. If you're going to use the X Window System, you should install this package, unless you have a monitor which can support 100 dpi resolution. In that case, you may prefer the 100dpi fonts available in the XFree86-100dpi-fonts package.
You may also need to install other XFree86 font packages.
To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 package corresponding to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package.
Finally, if you are going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install the XFree86-devel package.

The XFree86-ISO8859-2-75dpi-fonts package contains a set of Central European language fonts in 75 dpi resolution for the X Window System. If you have a high resolution monitor capable of supporting 100 dpi, you should install the 100 dpi version of this package instead.
If you are installing the X Window System and you need to display Central European language characters in 75 dpi resolution, you should install this package. You may also need to install one or more of the other XFree86 fonts packages as well. To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 video card package that corresponds to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. If you are going to develop applications that will run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
The XFree86-ISO8859-2-Type1-fonts package contains Central European Type 1 fonts for the X Window System. This set of fonts is known as the ulT1mo (or ultimo) collection. All of the included fonts are copyrighted to their authors and freeware. Original fonts were taken from the Internet or CDs.
If you need to display Central European language fonts on your X Window System, you should install the XFree86-ISO8859-2-Type1-fonts package. You may need to also install one or more of the other XFree86 fonts packages. To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 video card package which corresponds to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. Finally, if you are going to develop applications that will run as X clients, you'll need to install XFree86-devel.
The XFree86-ISO8859-9-100dpi-fonts package contains a set of Turkish language fonts in 100 dpi resolution and in accordance with the ISO8859-9 standard for the X Window System.
If you need to display Turkish language fonts for the X Window System, and your monitor is capable of supporting 100 dpi resolution, you should install this package. You may also need to install one or more of the other XFree86 fonts packages. To install the X Window System, you will need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 video card package which corresponds to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package.

The XFree86-ISO8859-9 package contains Turkish language (ISO8859-9) terminal fonts, modmaps for the Q and F style of Turkish keyboard mappings and a simple utility for changing the modmap.
If you need to display Turkish language fonts on your X Window System, or if you need a to use the Q and F style keyboard mappings, you should install the XFree86-ISO8859-9 package. You may also need to install other XFree86 font packages. If you're installing the X Window System, you'll need to install the XFree86 package, the XFree86 video card package which corresponds to your video card, the X11R6-contrib package, the Xconfigurator package and the XFree86-libs package. If you're going to develop applications that run as X clients, you will also need to install XFree86-devel.
The XFree86-ISO8859-9-75dpi-fonts package contains a set of Turkish language (ISO8859-9) fonts in 75 dpi resolution for the X Window System.
If you need to display Turkish language fonts on your X Window System, you should install this package. The Cyrillic fonts included with XFree86 3.3.2 and higher. Those who use a language requiring the Cyrillic character set should install this package.
GNOME Display Manager allows you to log into your system with the X Window System running. It is highly configurable, allowing you to run several different X sessions at once on your local machine, and can manage login connections from remote machines as well.
GQview is a browser for graphics files. Offering single click viewing of your graphics files. Includes thumbnail view, zoom and filtering features. And external editor support.
The kterm package provides a terminal emulator for the Kanji Japanese character set.
Install kterm if you need a Kanji character set terminal emulator. You'll also need to have the X Window System installed.
Rxvt is a color VT102 terminal emulator for the X Window System. Rxvt is intended to be an xterm replacement for users who don't need the more esoteric features of xterm, like Tektronix 4014 emulation, session logging and toolkit style configurability. Since it doesn't support those features, rxvt uses much less swap space than xterm uses. This is a significant advantage on a machine which is serving a large number of X sessions.
The rxvt package should be installed on any machine which serves a large number of X sessions, if you'd like to improve that machine's performance.
Free versions of the 35 standard PostScript fonts. With newer releases of ghostscript quality versions of the standard 35 Type 1 PostScript fonts are shipped. They were donated and licenced under the GPL by URW. The fonts.dir was specially made to match the original Adobe names of the fonts, e.g. Times, Helvetica etc. With X, LaTeX, or Ghostscript, these fonts are a must to have!
The x3270 program opens a window in the X Window System which emulates the actual look of an IBM 3278/3279 terminal, commonly used with mainframe applications. x3270 also allows you to telnet to an IBM host from the x3270 window.
Install the x3270 package if you need to access IBM hosts using an IBM 3278/3279 terminal emulator.
The xinitrc package contains the xinitrc file, a script which is used to configure your X Window System session or to start a window manager.
The xinitrc package should be installed if you use the X Window System.
