StarDivision has announced the release of a new StarOffice for Linux version (4.0.3). It should soon be available on a ftp server near you. Don't install older versions anymore (i.e. so40_lnx_01.tar.gz). The instructions below are for the latest version. Some new features
Intro
These instructions should help you install and run StarOffice 4.0.3 under RedHat Linux 4.2 or 5.0. It is possible to install the program for multiple users. Each user will end up with approximately 2 MB in his ~/StarOffice. This is much less than in previous versions.
Follow the instructions closely and you will have no problems.
Get it!
Get StarOffice 4.0.3 from StarDivision (Germany) [ http://www.stardivision.de/ ], StarDivision (US) [ http://www.stardivision.com/ ] or use a mirror (the file is huge, roughly 54MB). The version is free for private use. Make sure that you get the correct version (01 is the international telephone prefix for the US, 49 is for Germany -- you might want to try so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz then):
Install it!
Get the staroffice-wrapper RPM from a contrib mirror near you or here [ http://www.waldherr.org/redhat/rpm/i386/ ] (please use mirrors first, this server is pretty busy ...).
Remove any old version of StarOffice from the system:
rm -rf /usr/local/Office40
Put the file so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz somewhere on your system and make a link in /tmp to the file. We need approximately 120 MB there.
With your X server running, do
rpm -Uvh staroffice-wrapper-4.0-5.i386.rpmand choose any of the install methods BUT change the path to /usr/local/Office40.
You can now remove the file /tmp/so40sp3_lnx_01.tar.gz. Remember, each user must
/usr/local/Office40/bin/setup
Use it!
Fire StarOffice with soffice up. For convenience, you may want to add /usr/local/Office40/bin to your PATH.
