[ Moderator's note: This should have gone out with the other RH posting.
My error, I got confused. There's too much good stuff coming out for
Linux these days, I get confused trying keep track of things with my
fingers. I'm thinking of learning to use my abacus. Anyone have
a manual they can send me? I'm told it is of the model used in the
Far East, with about ten rows of pearls, each row divided into a longer
and shorter part, with five and two pearls, respectively. So far,
I've only been using it two hit students with, but I think it might be
the perfect portable analytic engine. --liw ]

Those whipper-snappers at Red Hat Software have finally 'fessed up that:

Red Hat Linux - Release 3.0.3 (Picasso)
                          is now shipping!

               !! Get it now at ftp://ftp.redhat.com !!

1. Highlights
- -------------

Red Hat Software is pleased to announce the release of its latest
edition of the Red Hat Linux Operating System. We are particularly
pleased with this release as it not only represents a significant
improvement in all the Red Hat functionality and reliability, but also
again demonstrates the remarkable creativity of the growing worldwide
Linux development community.

With its ease of installation, system management, automatic upgrades,
and preconfigured tools, Red Hat Linux is easier to use and manage
than ever. Highlights of release 3.0.3 include:

o Linux kernels up to 1.3.57. The stable 1.2.13 is the officially
   supported kernel.
o A new version of RPM (2.0) that provides many new features and
   dramatically faster performance.
o Now installs and runs on PC's with only 4MB memory!
o The new libc 5.2.18 libraries continue to move Linux towards
greater reliability and functionality. Specifically, the new libc
includes support for multiple threads needed for the Java SDK, as
well as greatly improved NYS support.
o Some 60 new packages from X tools to games
o New versions of many key Linux components from bind to sendmail.
o Ease of upgrading: Red Hat's RPM packaging technology combined
with glint, Red Hat's graphical installation manager, allows
for trouble free upgrades. We have tested 3.0.3's upgradeability
against all common versions of Red Hat 2.0 and Red Hat 2.1.
o Important new security features.
o Continues to feature many popular Linux tools that are
pre-configured to "run right out of the box" including the
Apache World Wide Web Server, and secure anonymous FTP.
o Much much more, see the "new features" section later in this
   post.

2. Standards, Testing, and Red Hat Linux
- ----------------------------------------

Red Hat Linux continues to track both Linux and UNIX industry
standards closely. Red Hat conforms to the Linux file system
standard: FSSTND, and tracks many other Linux and UNIX standards.

Testing is probably Linux's greatest strength and the origin of its
remarkable stability for most applications, and Red Hat Linux benefits
from this. The truly open development model followed by Linus
Torvalds and the Linux development community allows new releases of
the kernel, components, and distributions to be tested by hundreds of
thousands of users. Their access to everything at little or no cost,
including full source code, off many sites on the Internet enables
anyone to contribute to further development by not just reporting bugs
but contributing patches.

Red Hat Linux depends on this open development model. We post our
Operating System as "freely distributable" software for free download
off of many sites on the Internet, and we are grateful for the
valuable assistance we receive.

3. A Stable Software Platform -and- a Rapidly Evolving Technology
- -----------------------------------------------------------------

Red Hat's software packaging scheme (RPM) provides the reliable and
consistent installation on a stable environment that ISV's are looking
for, and yet allows for a flexible environment for further Linux
development.

RPM's advanced software packaging features enable RPM "packaged"
software to be installed easily and correctly on any Red Hat Linux
platform. Running older software versions on a new release of Red Hat
Linux is generally reliable and trouble free.

Check out RPM's many benefits and design features at:
http://www.redhat.com

4. Freely Distributable Software
- --------------------------------

Red Hat Linux is released as freely distributable software under the
terms of the GPL. This allows anyone to use Linux without restriction
and to contribute to Linux development. It also prevents anyone or
any corporation from restricting access to Linux or Linux source code.
Commercially licensed software can be ported to, and run on, Linux
while maintaining the license terms that the author uses for any other
platform. You can download Red Hat Linux without cost from dozens of
sites on the Internet. Read ftp://www.redhat.com/pub/MIRRORS for a
site convenient to you.

Red Hat Linux is also available from as part of many other Linux based
products from many reputable CD-ROM manufacturers, including Red Hat
Software. Check our web site for more details: http://www.redhat.com
or call us at (800) 454-5502, or (203) 454-5500.

5. NEW FEATURES
- ---------------

o RPM 2.0: A NEW VERSION OF RPM
Provides many new features and dramatically faster performance.

directly from your CD-ROM drive without the need for a boot
disk at all, (requires DOS to get started)
    - Single floppy CD-ROM install
    - FINE GRAINED PACKAGE SELECTION in text install (with package
      descriptions!)
    - Disk space required now calculated in text install during package
selection (to help avoid selecting more packages than you have
      disk space to accommodate)

o MORE HARDWARE SUPPORT
    - Red Hat Linux can be installed and run in only 4MB memory!
(although you may want more memory for better performance)
    - Adaptec 2940 SCSI

o XFree86 (X11R6) 3.1.2 X SERVER
    - Red Hat Software continues to support the XFree86 X server as
being a critically important piece of the freely distributable
Linux OS. Among other important features XFree86 gives you
the ability to install Red Hat Linux on as many machines as
you chose without additional cost or restriction.

o NEW LIBC LIBRARIES 5.2.18
    - Greatly improved NYS support
    - Java ready. Support for multiple threads needed for the Java SDK

======================================================================

6. RPM 2.0 - Red Hat Package Manager
- ------------------------------------

After installing Red Hat Linux once, you will never need to reinstall
Linux again! Our RPM packaging system is sophisticated enough to
allow upgrading to new Red Hat releases without reinstalling your
system - no partitioning, no backing up all your files, no headaches.

Red Hat 3.0.3 Linux is built on an entirely new third generation
packaging system called RPM. The RPM system features include smart
configuration file handling across package upgrades, "shared" file
handling, documentation searching support, and package installation
via FTP. You can install, uninstall, query, verify, and upgrade
individual RPM packages.

The Red Hat web site, http://www.redhat.com, contains more information
on RPM and the RPM-HOWTO, which describes how to use RPM and build
your own RPM packages.

A graphical package management tool called GLINT allows you to quickly
and easily manage and track your system. It displays a hierarchy
of packages represented by individual package icons, and has displays
progress meters during installation.

We are releasing RPM under the terms of the GPL and we would like to
encourage everyone to use it to package their software. You can get
RPM separately from Red Hat Linux from any of the official Red Hat FTP
mirror sites.

7. PRISTINE SOURCES
- -------------------

An important element of the design of the Red Hat Linux Operating
System is our commitment to the concept of "pristine sources". Our
RPM source packages include pristine, untouched sources, as well as
patches and a control file which defines the building and packaging
process. It enables us to work with other members of the Linux
development community easily and effectively by clearly separating and
documenting the code that they contribute from any modifications that
are required by Red Hat Linux.

======================================================================

8. AVAILABILITY
- ---------------

Red Hat Linux 3.0.3 is available by FTP from:

        ftp://ftp.redhat.com

and from many mirror sites on the Internet. It is also available on
CD-ROM from many CD-ROM manufacturers, including Red Hat Software.

Happy Linuxing!
