Red Hat Software is commited to the Linux File System Standard, and at the moment RHC Linux is ``partially compliant''. As of this writing the most recent FSSTND document was interim release 1.1, and a new version is expected very soon. We will continue to track the standard and bring RHC Linux towards full compliance.
While compliance with the standard means many things, the two most important are compatibility with other compliant systems, and the ability to mount the /usr partition read-only. The latter fact means the /usr partition can be mounted from a CD-ROM or from another machine via read-only NFS. Check the latest FSSTND document for the most up to date and complete definition of the standard.
RHC Linux strays from the FSSTND in the following areas:
sed is in /usr/bin, /etc/magic is moved to /usr/lib/magic. There is a symbolic link from /etc/utmp to /var/adm/utmp, for compatibility. RHC Linux has no /usr/share or /usr/local/share. The FSSTND /usr/man hierarchy is not implemented. TeX data is placed in /var/tex instead of /var/lib/texmf.
