PRESS RELEASE

			 Red Hat Software Announces
			    RHS Linux on CD-ROM

October 31, 1994

Chapel Hill, NC -- Red Hat Software is pleased to announce a new Linux
distribution available on CD-ROM. Built from scratch, RHS Linux represents
a quantum leap in Linux usability. RHS Linux is possibly the easiest Linux
distribution to install and maintain, and as such, it is perfectly suited to
the growing numbers of users moving from MS-DOS to Linux. While RHS Linux
is the perfect beginner's Linux, experienced users will find it to be a very
powerful development platform. Complete development tools, TeX/LaTeX suite,
X Window System, and scientific computation libraries are included -- and em
everything comes with sources.

* Installation

Installation is mediated through dialog(1) based scripts which walk you
through the installation process. Installation is supported directly from
the CD-ROM or over NFS. You can choose which packages to install, and
install others after the initial installation. As the installation
progresses you are presented with a progress meter, which estimates the time
to completion (anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour, depending on your
configuration). X Window System configuration is automatic, requiring only
the selection of the proper XFree86 server, and the desired video modes.
The ``Halloween'' release of RHS Linux supports the installation of the
following kernels: 1.0.9, 1.1.18, and 1.1.54. The version 1.1.54 kernel has
ALPHA support for LMS/Phillips and NEC-260 IDE CD-ROM drives, and the
Adaptec AHA-274X SCSI controller.

* Installation Management

With the graphical Linux Installation Manager you can track every package
installed on your system, and all packages available on the CD-ROM. You can
examine package descriptions and file contents before you install them.
With a few mouse button clicks you can install, uninstall, list and verify
all installed packages. The verification procedure checks that all files
are where they should be, that they have the right owner, group and
permissions, etc. Any owner, group or permission anomalies can be corrected
automatically.

* System Management

A number of graphical administration tools are provided which eliminate the
need to manually edit configuration files and remember awkward command line
options. These tools cover use and group management, TCP/IP configuration
and administration, filesystem management, and printer management.

* Development Tools

A complete set of C/C++ development tools is provided, as are a number of
other programming language compilers and interpreters, including Common
Lisp, Prolog, Scheme, Fortran, and Tcl/Tk. Full sources for everything on
the CD-ROM are included in package format, in the configuration used to
build the system.

* Linux FFSSTND

RHS Linux will follow, as closely as possible, the Linux File System
Standard. This standard clearly defines the location of many files,
insuring that compliant binary packages can be installed without difficulty
on all compliant systems.

* Documentation

In addition to complete man pages, info pages, and a help tool, a 192 page
manual is included which covers all aspects of installation. All the system
administration and package management tools are covered, and there is an
overview of the various systems and layout of RHS Linux. The manual
includes the entire Linux Installation and Getting Started book by Matt
Welsh, and Ian Jackson's Linux FAQ. The manual is attractively bound in red
plasti-coil and will lay open flat.

RHS Linux is now shipping at a suggested retail price of $49.95, which
includes 30 days of installation support. For more information, CD-ROM
contents, hardware compatibility, or to order, please contact Red Hat
Software, PO Box 4325, Chapel Hill, NC 27515, phone (919) 309-9560, or
red...@redhat.com.
