The protocol is described at http://www.its.caltech.edu/~jafl/xdnd/ The protocol for dropping on the root window has been rewritten to conform to the latest Gtk+ implementation. This protocol is now supported by JX, Qt, and GTK+, so programs written for Gnome, programs written for KDE, and programs like Code Crusader and Arrow will all be able to work together on the same desktop.
