Out of curiousity (and maybe something else), I have a few (2) questions: What kind of features should it have? (tools, selections, filters, etc.) What file formats should it support? (jpeg, gif, tiff, etc.) Thanks in advance, Peter Mattis

Berkeley newsgroups: comp.os.linux.hardware I'll be purchasing a 17" monitor soon and would appreciate any recommendations or warnings about monitors. I need (want) one that can do 1280x1024 at greater than 75 hz. (My monitor at work only does 60 hz at that resolution and I get a splitting headache after about 30 minutes of use). From what I've seen so far, the ctx1785gm is one of the cheapest monitors that will meet this requirement. ($700). But I've heard negative reports about ctx monitors and problems with ctx in getting repairs and/or replacements. I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest monitor, but money is always a consideration. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Peter Mattis

This version is using the linux kernel 1.2.8. I am currently using 1.1.59 with no problems. When I attempted to start the system from the boot floppies, I got something similar to this: Buslogic_out failed Buslogic SCSI:buslogic_stat: status=39 intrflags=84 BusLogic SCSI setup_mailboxes:failed setting up mailboxes aha1542_in failed (3) Unable to determine Adaptec DMA Priority. Disabling board No BIOS32 extentions present. This release still depends on it. Sorry. SCSI: 0 hosts. SCSI: detected total. I am currently running Linux 1.1.59 as I type this, so I don't think my controller has gone bad. Is the adaptec 1542B no longer supported? Do I need to compile the kernel myself instead of using Slackware, and select a different option flag? Any help is appreciated! Thanks! Jeff Miller jcmil...@goonsquad.spies.com

Actually, I think the problem is with the buslogic driver, but compiling the kernel with only the adaptec driver should (definately?) work. Peter Mattis

I understand that some folks tried to do this a while back, and found that Apple was not forthcoming with the necessary information. I also hear that at least one person from Apple offerred to help, but that the Linux community was unresponsive to this fellow's offer. Let's try again. I'd like to try working with the folks at Apple who would have the information needed to have Linux talk to PowerMac hardware. I don't know whether I can get that info, but at least I'd have a shot at it because I'm a system programmer for Apple. I'd also like to communicate with those who have worked on it before, or on other Linux ports. I should make it very clear that I would be doing this on my own, and not as an Apple-sponsored project. Apple has no position with respect to Linux that I know of. -- Mike Crawford | Make the news worth reading again - crawf...@scruznet.com | Globally kill the Win95 posts. crawf...@maxwell.ucsc.edu | Place the following in ~/News/KILL: http://www.scruznet.com/~crawford/ | /Win.*95/j

I feel your desire. I recently bought a new pentium instead of a mac for the single reason that linux is unavailable on the mac. If linux had been available for the mac when I was deciding what to purchase then my decision would have been easy. As it is they lost my business because of their (braindead) decisions. Hey Apple...are you listening? People really like your hardware...they just want to use a different operating system. ...maybe a letter writing campaign would work.... Peter Mattis

Berkeley newsgroups: comp.os.linux.hardware I recently purchased an HP/Colorado T1000 tape drive for backing up my linux box (a Gateway P5/133). I'm almost positive I installed it correctly since it works under dos...however, under linux, whenever i try to use `mt' i get an I/0 Error. I'm using kernel version 1.2.13 and zftape 2.03b. I've recreated the device nodes as specified in the zftape README file. I'm not at my home machine right now, but the exact error looked something like: > mt -f /dev/rft0 rewind mt: /dev/rft0: I/0 Error (And, of course, I've tried the other tape devices "/dev/rft[0-4]") Hmmm, not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm using one of the TR-1 tapes (400 mb capacity). Any responses are appreciated. Peter Mattis

Berkeley newsgroups: comp.os.linux.hardware Yay!!! I fixed my own problem and thought I'd report on what I think is a slightly stupid thing on the part of zftape. The problem I was having is that zftape was configured incorrectly. By default the "zftape-2.03b" distribution comes with a non-standard floppy controller specified as the floppy controller. This is specified in the Makefile. But I didn't see anywhere in the documentation anything regarding editing the Makefile to change this. (I just happened to glance in there and started reading the comments). I would think that the default should be the standard floppy controller. (Or at least have nice big warning in the docs that you may need to change something in the Makefile). Oh well, problem solved...no biggy. Peter Mattis
