I assume people on this mailing list are willing to beta test packages which may not be all there, and those on the newsgroup simply want a distribution that works. zorst

Yup; there's a bug there.... the patches in /pub/linux/ALPHA/serial on tsx-11 fix it --- there's a race condition that wasn't properly handled. My monitor (Supercom SV1485) is only capable of interlace at this high resolution (35.3 kHz horizontal, 87 Hz vertical [per field, not frame], with a total of 45 MHz bandwidth - yes it's a cheap monitor, but at least it is 0.28mm dot pitch and it gives good clean images). If I have a mode line like: "1024x768" 45 1024 1040 1208 1264 768 769 777 817 it gives me a stable image that flickers significantly. Notice in the above line that I didn't specify "Interlace" flag. If I give: "1024x768" 45 1024 1040 1208 1264 768 769 777 817 Interlace the X server runs, but I get an unstable image (rolling vertically and it looks like multiple vertical images would be present even if the rolling could be stopped). Making adjustments to the various values above doesn't help. After some experimentation I came up with the a rather bizzare mode: "1024x768" 45 1024 1040 1208 1264 384 385 390 409 Interlace it puts up an image that looks identical to the first mode listed above except absolutely no discernable flicker! It's great looking, so what is my problem: whenever I try to move the mouse pointer below the half screen point (greater than line 384) the virtual screen capability of the X server kicks in and the screen pans up! I guess this isn't too surprising since I'm essentially telling the system that I only have 384 vertical lines, but it's displaying all 768 just fine - and it allows me to place windows below the 384 line point of the virtual screen. /*** Note this guess was based upon an example in the modeDB.txt file that gave one monitor's example as (approximately, from memory): "1024x768i" 45 1024 1040 1208 1264 768 385 390 409 Interlace But this didn't work for me. ***/ So my questions are: 1) Why would the first listing above work if my monitor can only handle interlace at 1024? It seems as though I'm not specifying interlace, but it is doing the right thing. The flicker seems the same as when I used to have Windows3 running at 1024x768 mode (forgive me for my past sins). It's not so much as to make me think something is wrong, but it is enough to make me not want to use it. Note if I decrease it to about 650 lines, the total refresh rate increases (still 45 MHz clock) and the flicker is almost nill. I could live with this, but I'd like a full 768 lines if possible. 2) Why doesn't the second listing work? 3) Why does the 3rd listing give me a great 1024x768 image? And how could I convince the system to give me this great looking image and still allow the mouse to move past half screen without panning the virtual screen? It seems like everything about X is convinced I have a 768 line screen except the virtual screen panning portion. 4) Is there a way to supress the virtual screen panning? NOTE: in all cases I had: Virtual 1024x768 if I tried to change this to: Virtual 1024x384 only the first 384 lines of the image would be displayed. Tim Cullip cullip@cs.unc.edu

That last post had all sorts of tabs in it. Here it is cleaned up. --------------------- X-Mn-Key: X11 Introduction: I am hoping to get linux on my Gateway 2000 386/25 soon. Currently I am running Interactive Unix 3.0 w/ X11r4 and am using a Hercules GraphicStation (60Mhz TI 304010 cpu, 1MB VRAM/2MB DRAM) and AGE-Logic's Xoftware 2.0 for the X11r4 server. I am very pleased with the X performance, but have not seen an 8514 server some of which claim 85000 Xstones. Anyways, I am interested in learning about the guts of operating systems and drivers in particular. Also, I am interested in high performance graphics. As a result, i am interested in learning about X drivers, particularly for 8514 boards. (I would love to create free drivers for 340x0 boards, but don't have the $1500 for the TI SDK (Software Developers Kit)... plus I don't think many people have these sorts of boards... Is there anyone out there? with 340x0 boards that would like free X?) Having said all that... (OBTW, there is an appendix at the end of this letter summarizing what i have learned about ATI's Ultra line.) Question #1: What would you purchase for a high performance graphics card that is also 8514/A compatible given the following prices: 1) ATI Graphics Vantage - $215 2) ATI Graphics Ultra (x MB) - $225 3) ATI Graphics Ultra + (1MB) - $299 4) ATI Graphics Ultra + (2MB) - $340 5) ATI Graphics Ultra Pro (1MB) - $499 6) ATI Graphics Ultra Pro (2MB) - $549 7) other...? Question #2: Has anyone benchmarked either the S3 X11 server being developed or the X8514 (alpha release) server? And if so, what are the results? The following are Windows 3.1 benchmarks: Graphics Board WINMARKS -------------------------------- Graphics Ultra 8-10 x 10^6 S3 boards 7-9 x 10^6 Graphics Ultra + 21 x 10^6 Graphics Ultra Pro 25 x 10^6 Question #3: Can we expect that X11 performance differences on different boards to be similar to the Windows 3.1 marks? Question #4: If the 8514 performance of the Ultra +/Pro does not scale as the above winmarks... i.e. 8514 performance of the Ultra, Ultra +, and Ultra Pro is all about the same... one would think that for X8514, the Graphics Ultra is sufficient. If so, what are peoples opinions concerning X8514 (using Ultra) vs XS3 (using S3 boards) ? I have learned the following about ATI's Graphics Ultra line: Model Processor Price Comments --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8514/Ultra ?? $268 (1) Oldest Ultra board; No built-in VGA Graphics Vantage ?? $215 (1) Built-in SVGA; 8514/A compatible Graphics Ultra Mach8 $225 (2) Original Ultra; Is this still being produced? Graphics Ultra + Mach32 $299 1MB (1) Uses DRAM; 1280x1024 requires $340 2MB (1) 2MB and is interlaced; ATI Tech Support, as of 10/22/92, said that the Ultra + had not yet been released! Graphics Ultra Pro Mach32 $449 1MB (3) Uses VRAM; 1280x1024 requires $549 2MB (3) 2MB and is non-interlaced; Shipping as of 10/22/92. Notes: (1) Price from CDW (Computer Discount Warehouse) in Chicago (2) Price from Gateway 2K A-Team Enhancement Sales (800)252-3333 (3) Price from CDW, but from memory - I'm not sure this is exact, but think it's pretty close Other Notes: Mach8 Programmers Kit available for $50. The Kit describes the Mach8 registers, both proprietary registers and 8514/A registers. Mach32 Programmers Kit not released yet, but ATI Tech Support said they expect that one will be released. No time frame given. Ultra + not released yet. ATI Tech Support said they didn't know if the UltraCad AutoCad drivers would be sold with the Ultra + or not. This point is confusing because the Ultra Pro is being sold with the UltraCad drivers. The nice thing about UltraCad apparently is that it uses a 32bit display list. (The Mach32 executes (or can execute) 32bit intstructions.) One would think that the Ultra + would be able to use the UltraCad drivers since it too has a Mach32 processor, but the point is unclear, and the Ultra + is not released yet - or so says ATI tech support on Thursday morning 10/22/92. Date: Fri, 27 Nov 1992 05:22:47 +0200 X-Mn-Key: X11 I just installed the New Linux SLS .98pl5. It installed flawlessly and works pretty good. Lots of bugs are gone now and it works much better overall than the previous version. Alas, now X won't start! First of all, the version now supplied with Linux SLS is a little different. Seems very strict about the Xconfig file. I had to change my old one. I had Xfree 1.0 now my screen says Xfree 1.0y. I've tried logging errors but the system dies and only the 3-fingered salute will unhang it. X seems to start but after going into graphics mode, it just sits there. I redirected stderr to my printer but it didn't print anything out. My printer works fine, I've been using Ghostscript to print stuff out now and its great. Also, my mouse no longer works with the test program. It was working before as Microsoft on /dev/ttys0. Now it won't work on any of them. The only error I get is when Linux boots. It says my network card at I/O 228 didn't respond. I don't have one so that is to be expected. I've scanned FAQ's and readme's but didn't see much to help so I figured someone else must have had this happen or know where some helpful info would be. Here is some info: 33mhz 386DX, 8meg RAM, 8meg swap, IDE hard drive, extended file system (seems to be fine), and I have removed SCSI support from the kernel. I will axe TCP/IP next. ===================================================== Shannon Hendrix |shendrix@pcs.cnu.edu Christopher Newport University |--------------------- Newport News, VA |** space for rent ** =====================================================

Oddly enough, I don't see the sources at any of the usual Linux FTP sites. --Adam J. Richter (adam@netcom.com) ------------------------------ End of X11 Digest ***************** -------
