Unbeknownst to me -- or my machine -- comp.newprod is a moderated newsgroup. This resulted in a quick death for both the comp.newprod and comp.unix.sysv386 postings. This is a reposting to comp.unix.sysv386 of the 12-Sept-91 announcement. (Note that it is being posted to comp.unix.sysv386 since some readers of that newsgroup have explicitly requested that this information be posted there.) If anyone knows who the comp.newprod moderator is, would you please email me his address. Thank you. My apologies for wasting bandwidth if you actually received the original posting. Original posting starts here: ------------------------------------------------ Last Sunday (8-Sept-91) I wrote in the comp.unix.sysv386 newsgroup: Watch for an announcement in comp.newprod in a day or two. I have intentionally delayed posting the announcement to the net until today (12-Sept-91) so that it would coincide with the announcement date of the press release being sent to journalists from Riedman Communications. This is part zero of a three part announcement which is being posted to comp.newprod. It is also being posted to comp.unix.sysv386 since some readers of that newsgroup have explicitly requested that this information be posted there. (Evidently some sites don't carry the comp.newprod newsgroup.) The topics of the following parts are: 1) Copy of press release sent to journalists. 2) Copy of text from advertisement in "The X Journal." 3) Additional technical and miscellaneous details. -- Mark Mark W. As a member of the X Consortium, SGCS sponsored inclusion of the X386 X server into the official X11R5 source code distribution. Mark Snitily, founder and president of SGCS, ported MIT's recently released X11R5 source code to System V/386. Snitily worked closely with Thomas Roell, the author of the X386 X server. "The X386 X server surpasses anything I have found from the major vendors. Our objective is to establish the defacto standard for X11 on 386 platforms," commented Snitily. "One of our future goals is to provide Motif 1.2, once it is released." Some of the new features of X11R5 include: PEX (PHIGS/+ Extension to X) - 3D graphics; networked-based font server; scalable fonts; device-independent colors; Xlib support of internationalization and new clients including editres, viewres, xconsole and xcmsdb. The price of X11R5 from SGCS is competitive with the distribuition price of the source code if purchased directly from the MIT X Consortium or from other X Consortium members. According to SGCS, the benefits of purchasing X11R5 from SGCS versus obtaining it from other resources are that SGCS: * includes source, executables, and development libraries. * provides technical support directly from the authors of the X386 X server and System V/386 port of X11R5 via E-mail or an 800 number for sales and support. * offers a money back guarantee. * includes the contributed software tape, which will be released in October as part of the standard package. * runs on UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 and Release 4.0 from ISC, SCO, DELL, ESIX and AT&T. * is compatible with X servers running on other hardware platforms. * offers UUCP support of the X11R5 product to registered owners. SGCS is offering X11R5 at a special introductory price of $495 with printed manuals and $395 without the manuals. The regular price will be $695/$595. To contact SGCS by E-mail: m...@zok.sgcs.com.
